Author and professional/tech writer Zachary J. Zolud confirmed first-hand that MK Boxing was one of the primary inspirations for writing the piece, which was published by The University of Massachusetts Lowell.
Titled “Jab Cross Slip Slip Hook” (* something many of you may be very familiar with or read below), in this second-person/submersion narrative, Zachary J. Zolud explains how boxing is a macrocosm of a chess game and throws you right there in the ring!
If you have a minute, take a look at it! We hope you like it!

And come to the MK Boxing to see what “inspired this work” (we are open daily!)
- Jab (1): Throw your lead hand straight to snap the opponent’s guard or draw a counter.
- Cross (2): Rotate your hips and back foot to drive your power hand straight down the center.
- Slip: Immediately bend and shift your torso slightly to the outside of the opponent’s incoming punch (slipping right for an orthodox fighter).
- Slip: Perform a second, consecutive slip to change the angle, evade follow-up strikes, and load your lead side.
- Hook: Explode with your lead hand in a sweeping arc to strike the side of the opponent’s head or body.
